Classification of psychoactive substances

Sedative
Substances with calming properties or able to favourise sleep.
Barbiturates: amobarbital, pentobarbital, phenobarbital, secobarbital, etc.
Benzodiazepines: chlordiazepoxide, diazepam, flunitrazepam, temazepam, etc.
Opiates: buprenorphine, codeine, dextrometorphane, dextropropoxyphene, fentanyl, heroin, hydrocodone, hydromorphone, LAAM, methadone, morphine, opium, oxycodon, etc.
Others: alcohol, ethchlorvinol, gluthetimide, chloral hydrate, meprobamate, methaqualone, sodium oxybate, etc.
Hallucinogens
Substances that may to lead to hallucinations. The quintessential example being Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD).
Indoles: llysergic acid, dimethyltryptamine, hallucinogenic mushrooms (psilocybine, psilocine), ibogaine
Phenylacoylamines: mescalin, Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA)
Others: cannabis, ketamine, phencyclidine, methylpemoline, 2CB, etc.
Stimulants

Substances with stimulant properties, the quitessential example being cocaine. They are used to increase vigilance and intellectual capacity.
Amphetamines and derivates.
Cocaine
Methcathinone
Others: amineptine, methylphenidate, pemoline, phenmetrazine, phentermine, ephedrine, nicotine, cafeine, betel nut, yohimbine, phenylpropanolamine.
